Saint Xenia of Saint Petersburg, the "Fool for Christ”, whose life of holy eccentricity and boundless charity, drew countless souls to the merciful heart of God. Born in the mid-18th century as the wife of a royal chorister, Xenia’s world was shattered when her husband died suddenly. In her grief she cast aside every possession—robe for homespun rags, title for anonymity—and wandered the streets of Petersburg singing hymns, blessing all she met. Clad in her late husband’s military coat, she became for the city’s lost and marginalized a living icon of compassion: feeding orphans with bread borrowed from neighbors, guiding wayward pilgrims into shelter, and offering her very prayers as a cloak against despair. Though her tomb in Smolenskoye Cemetery was marked by a simple wooden cross, miracles sprang from the soil: sudden healings, the sick comforted, and the troubled finding peace. Orthodox pilgrims flock to her feast on feast day, invoking her intercession for family reconciliation and safe passage through life’s storms.
