Orthodox Three Budded Three Bar Crucifix (Silver & Gold Vermeil)
Orthodox Three Budded Three Bar Crucifix (Silver & Gold Vermeil)
Orthodox Three-Budded / Three-Bar Orthodox Crucifix
(Orthodox Tradition)
This pendant carries the Church’s oldest song about the paradox of God’s victory: the same Cross on which Christ was slain becomes the throne of life. Rendered in the Orthodox idiom — trefoil (three-budded) terminals and the three horizontal bars — the piece is faithful to the language of icons: every line is theology, every proportion a homily. The central bar shows the crucified Lord, whose kenosis (self-emptying) overturned death. Above is the title; below is the slanted footboard that speaks of judgement and mercy, the two thieves and the choice of the human heart. Around the arms, the trefoils quietly teach the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit stand behind the mystery of redemption. Worn near the heart, the crucifix becomes a kept-word of the Gospel: “By the Cross you have been saved.”
Note:
Although perfectly permissible for Catholic piety, this Crucifix is modeled according to Eastern Orthodox standards, where the Corpus of Christ's divine body is not lifted from the cross but is a singularly raised two dimensional relief, and thus appropriate for Orthodox Baptisms.
