She described Christ’s pierced heart as the wellspring of divine mercy and asked for a feast, public worship, and reparative devotion. The Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and many bishops promoted the devotion; by the 19th century the Church had given it broad liturgical expression — the Feast of the Sacred Heart (the Friday after Corpus Christi) and practices such as First Fridays and the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart in homes. Behind those developments lie firmer roots in the Gospel: the pierced side of Christ (John 19) and the early Church’s Eucharistic piety. The Sacred Heart language gathers these biblical and liturgical threads into a single, tender symbol: Christ’s love poured out for sinners. To the wearer, this invokes Mercy made personal as the heart heart reminds us that God’s love is not abstract but an intimate, compassionate reality.
