The Peacock and Cross is familiar to all the ancient Churches. In the Byzantine & Greek traditions, the peacocks appear in mosaics and hymnography as signs of the paradisal banquet and resurrection; the Cross anchors eucharistic devotion. For the Latin West Traditions, the medieval art and authors used the peacock alongside resurrection imagery; devotional practice emphasizes the Cross as victory and mercy. For the Oriental (Coptic, Syriac, Armenian, Ethiopian), the peacock motif and the Cross both appear in liturgical textiles and manuscript borders as emblems of paradise and divine triumph.
