A companion in struggle
Worn close to the heart, this icon-pendant honors St. Paisios — a modern Elder whose gentle asceticism and prayerful counsel drew countless souls back to the life of Christ. Born Arsenios in Cappadocia and baptized by Saint Arsenios of Cappadocia, the saint carried from childhood the blessing and spiritual legacy of that holy father. From his youth he loved the Lives of the Saints, and by his fifteenth year experienced a deep and decisive encounter with God that set him on the path of monastic struggle. After serving his country with courage during difficult years for Greece, he finally entered Mount Athos where he embraced a life of uncompromising labor, prayer and humility. At Athos he was tonsured and took the name Paisios, and later received the Great Schema — the form of life of the elder who withdraws into deeper hesychia and labour for souls. In cell and kelli he practiced ceaseless prayer, made spiritual gifts for pilgrims, and offered counsel that sprang from a life of prayer and discernment. Saint Paisios saw the mercy of God in silence and vision. He testified to encounters with the Uncreated Light, with the Mother of God, and with angels; yet his holiness always showed itself in humility, continual work for others, and loving compassion for the sick, the poor, and those estranged by false teaching. He suffered illness with patience, continued to pray for and counsel thousands, and fell asleep in the Lord on July 12, 1994. The Church later glorified (added) him to the Hagiologion, that his example might continue to guide the faithful toward repentance, prayer, and theosis. Wearing this pendant reminds us of the call to hesychia (quiet prayer and inward watchfulness) and of our companion in struggle, Saint Paisios, who fought illness, temptation, and even loneliness.
Saint Paisios, Pray to God for us!
