Extreme Humility
God Emptied Himself... and Humbled Himself
This pendant captures the paradox of the Passion: the King with a crown of thorns, the Lord who takes the reed and permits Himself to be mocked. In that image is the deepest teaching shared by the ancient Churches — that God’s greatness is made perfect in self-emptying (kenosis). Christians from the East, West and the Oriental tradition have always read the Passion as the place where God stoops to meet the lowest human need: forgiveness, healing, reconciliation.
Wearing this piece calls us to remember two truths at once: first, the scandalous humility of the Son of God who chose to be stripped for our sake; second, the holiness that rises from surrender — the life that is born when pride dies. It is an invitation to imitation: not to theatrical self-abasement, but to the quiet courage of those who carry others’ burdens, serve without applause, and love when it costs them most. By the Crown of thorns the world’s mockery made instrument of salvation — love sanctified by suffering. His Reed, the mock-scepter, becomes a sign of Christ’s willingness to be regarded as nothing, thereby revealing true kingship. His Exposed chest bears the incarnate reality — God’s solidarity with every wound and weakness. These are symbols familiar and dear to all ancient churches, God is near the lowly. This small pendant captures a great mystery!
